Fluted Cape - a pastel on paper painting by Richard Stanley
The view South from Birches Bay looking over to the Neck at Bruny Island. This was painted on site for the En Plein Air Art Competition Woodbridge Easter 2005. I really enjoyed the light on the horizon and the clouds, which shows the amazing contours of Bruny Island. The sailing boats in the middle distance, give scale and an indicates of the movement of the wind. The subtle play of light located off the headland in the background fascinated me and gave me the inspiration to paint it.

Materials

Here is a list of tools and materials used in this :
  • Eight Rembrandt Soft Pastels (chalk) - various colours
  • Willow charcoal for black areas
  • Red primed abrasive pastel paper
  • Aerosol based fixative to bind colours to paper
  • Tasmanian Red Myrtle Frame
  • Double matte board for professional finish
  • Portable, fully adjustable outdoor easel
Having painted this outside, a masonite board was used on the easel to clip the base paper down securely from wind. My presence at the side of the road where I was painting seemed to arouse some interest, with the owners of the boat in the foreground coming over for a chat, and helping to move my easel off the road to let vehicles pass. They were a great form of encouragement having watched me worked and been impressed by my work.
