"Stanley's Gallery - Cygnet" - A painting on heavy pastel paper - 50cm x 40cm

 

Created in the studio over one evening from a still life setup. I really enjoyed painting in the controlled environment, where the lighting and subject matter do not form constraints by changing. I loved the play of light and shadow which give the vegetables form.

Materials

This is a breakdown of the materials and tools I used in the studio to create the painting:
  • Fourteen Rembrandt Soft Pastels (chalk) - various colours
  • Willow charcoal for black areas
  • Red primed abrasive pastel paper
  • Aerosol based fixative to bind colours to paper
  • Tasmanian Red Myrtle Frame
  • Mounted behind glass for safety
  • Single Off White matte board
  • Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
Look closely at this painting and you can see the intentional exposure of the dark red base paper, which shows through the charcoal to add visual interest and enhance the harmony. This pastel was initiated by our usual Friday night 'paint-off' with friends in the studio.
