Mt. Wellington from Flowerpot Hill - a pastel on canvas painting by Richard Stanley
This painting was done on site from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm and finished that night in the studio, handed in the next day to be judged for the competition. During the course of the day the weather started to deteriate with showers coming in waves. You can see the next shower front coming over in the sky. I worked under a tarp during these showers and at the end of the day as I was packing up, a puddle that had developed on the tarp accidently splashed over the picture. Fortunately I managed to dry it out in the studio and being chalk, I could replace the blured areas. I was exhilarated to find that I had won the pastel section with this picture.

Materials

This is a list of the materials and tools I used on location and in the studio:
  • Fourteen Rembrandt Soft Pastels (chalk) - various colours
  • Willow charcoal for black areas
  • Red primed abrasive pastel paper
  • Aerosol based fixative to bind colours to paper
  • Tasmanian Red Myrtle Frame
  • Protected behind glasss
  • Double matte board for professional finish
  • Portable and fully adjustable location easel
This painting was created onsite, utilising my van and a tarp to create a outdoor studio to protect both the painting and myself from the elements. The beauty of working outside is that you can take in the whole scene, an uniterrupted view with the natural light constantly changing, which presents a challenge to capture it before the weather changes. This forces you to work quickly, make instant decisions and results in your first impressions of the scene actually making it to the paper as you first experienced it.
