Mt. Rugby - a pastel on canvas painting by Richard Stanley
I flew into the South West Wilderness World Heritage area to Melaleuca with my friend Greg who manages Par Avion Wilderness Tours and stayed on his boat for three days. I was amazed at the scenery here and also the total lack of human interference. No fences, no houses - except for Denny King's cabin (a pioneer who lived there for many years), no cattle or even an absence of man-made forest clearings, make this area a romantic painter's dream. Each day we meandered up the river and even arrived at the South West coast 20 km from our camp. The first day was bleek with wind and rain but on the second morning the weather was exceptional with fantastic water reflections and no wind, and I was keen to capture this idyllic moment. On this day we came around a bend in the river and there in the distance was Mt. Rugby rising up like a beacon for the whole area.

Materials

This is the inventory of the materials and also the tools that I used whilst painting this pastel:
  • Eleven Rembrandt Soft Pastels (chalk) - various colours
  • Willow charcoal for black areas
  • Dark Green primed abrasive pastel paper
  • Aerosol based fixative to bind colours to paper
  • Tasmanian Red Myrtle Frame
  • Mounted behind glass
  • Double matte board for professional finish
  • Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
This trip was a watershed for me as I was so overwhelmed by the majesty and grandeur of the whole area, so I feel it's ambience cannot help but strongly influence my future work. Each time I see this artwork, I feel overwhelmed with the desire to throw a stone into the foreground pool, and just enjoy watching the ever increasing ripples.
