Lavender Farm - a pastel on canvas painting by Richard Stanley
This painting came about as the Bridestowe Lavender Farm wanted my impression of their property so they could sell cards & bookmarks of the image to their customers. I enjoyed the composition with the foreground sweeping into the only tree on the property and the soft blue hills framing the background. The violet compliments the colours of these hills. The lavender colour persists from the foreground to the background and has also been reflected into the clouds to give harmony to the overall painting.

Materials

The following list is a detailed inventory of the tools and materials that I used to create this pastel:
  • Ten Rembrandt Soft Pastels (chalk) - various colours
  • Pale blue primed abrasive pastel paper
  • Willow charcoal for black areas
  • Aerosol based fixative to bind colours to paper
  • Tasmanian Sassafrass Frame
  • Double matte board for professional finish
  • Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
You will notice the high horizon on this work to emphasise the sweeping forground in this painting. I used a technique to give the painting depth, by starting with block colour in the distance and gradually working detail into the pastel as it heads towards the foreground. This can be seen especially well in the lavender flowers.
