Deep Bay
"Huon Valley - Tasmania" - A painting on heavy pastel paper - 67cm x 47cm
This was one of those beautiful warm
autumn days in the Huon with no
wind and the mirror reflection calling
to be painted. I have been told it has
a Glover type feel to it. I worked hard to capture the late afternoon glow cast by the setting sun by experimenting with the relationship between blue and pink colours.
Materials
This is a list indicating the materials and tools I used during the painting of this pastel:
- Twelve Rembrandt Soft Pastels (chalk) - various colours
- Willow charcoal for black areas
- Red primed abrasive pastel paper
- Aerasol based fixative to bind colours to paper
- Tasmanian Huon Pine Frame
- Double matte board for professional finish
- Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
I have purposely chosen a warm relaxed feel for this piece to try and capture the exquisite light that the Huon Valley is renowned for. Pastels create a romantic atmosphere due to the haze that you can achieve through tone. This is especially evident in the background and middle distance of the artwork. Blending was achieved by gently rubbing with my fingers. The trees in the foreground have a slight silhouette feel to give depth to the painting.
