Oils

I love to work in oil paint as I like tone and because this medium takes up to three days to dry it gives me a chance to blend different colours together. After putting down seperate colours in bands while it is wet I use a large dry brush so as not to dirty the colours and criss cross quickly to blend to an even tone. Oil paint also dries to a beautiful vibrant colour and after drying you can put more layers of colour on top. With larger canvases I usually cover the first stage with a water based acrylic paint which dries within half an hour and then I can come over the top with oil paint to finish off.

Pastels

I use chalk pastels in my work starting with a sandpaper based coloured heavy paper. It's good to use a complimentary base coloured paper to go with the colour theme of the pastels, for example a red paper for a green type picture. Then the under colour of the paper comes through the artwork to enhance the image. Pastels are also great for getting the work down quickly, no mixing, no thining needed just pure colour. The difficult part is that it turns to powder once applied and you can't get many layers on top. Blending (tone) can be done quickly either with your finger or a brush.

All pastel paintings feature elegant Tasmanian minor species wood frames which incorporate glass to protect the delicate nature of chalk pastel.

Commissions

If you like my style of painting then I am happy to undertake commission work. For example you might have a particular aspect where you live or a favourite view you would like to see painted by me. I have undertaken several commissions in the past both small and large. You can send me a photo (larger the better) of the view you want or just describe to me the picture you had in mind and we can go from there.
