"South West Tasmania" - an original oil painting on Belgian Linen - 102cm x 76cm

South West World Heritage - an oil on canvas original painting by Richard Stanley
This was painted a week after Mt. Rugby (See story Mt. Rugby) A little further on up the river around yet another bend this composition excited me. The tidal drift patterns on the surface of the water leads your eye into the scene with majestic mountains in the background. If you look closely towards the centre there are two birds flying just above the water that took off as we approached. The inset shows the birds and the actual canvas texture.

Materials

Here is a list of the materials that I used during the painting of this canvas:
  • Windsor & Newton oil paints thinned with Archival Odourless solvent
  • Twenty shades created from a palette of seven tertiary colours
  • Stretched Belgian linen over timber frame
  • Two coats of Gesso primer composed of plaster and white acrylic paint
  • Sable haired fine pointed brush - tip size 1mm
  • Six Hog hair brushes - varying sizes 3mm - 20mm
  • Large pure bristled blending brush - size 100mm
  • Vegetable gum non-porous renewable paper palette
  • Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
Over a three day period on location, a series of reference photographs were painstakingly taken from my boat. These were used back in the studio to aid my memory with important considerations such as shape, composition and light. This is a common practise among professional artists who specialise in painting in remote areas.
