Scamanda - an original oil on canvas painting by Richard Stanley
This view captivated me for the way that the sweep of the bay continued on unbroken to the horizon. The wide format was especially chosen to emphasize the horizon. The underpainting was done with an orange / red acrylic, and when dry, oil paint was then painted over the top. If you consider the sky, you can see where I have rubbed part of the clouds back whilst the oil paint was wet (using dry linen) to expose the acrylic colours underneath, in order to bring warmth to the sky and match the colour temperature of the foreground.

Materials

This painting was created in my studio using the following materials:
  • Underpainting performed using orange and red acrylic paints to raise colour temperature
  • Two coats of Gesso primer composed of plaster and white acrylic paint
  • Windsor & Newton oil paints thinned with Archival Odourless solvent
  • Twenty five shades created from a palette of fifteen tertiary colours
  • Stretched canvas over timber frame
  • Sable long-haired fine pointed rigger brush - tip size 1mm
  • Twelve Hog hair brushes - varying sizes 3mm - 20mm
  • Single pure bristled blending brush - size 75mm
  • Vegetable gum non-porous renewable paper palette
  • Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
The foreground track in the sand leads the eye down towards the breaking wave. This particular day had good surf coming off the point with beautiful sets. From the breaking wave, the swell lines tend lead your eye along the beach and away into the horizon to the clouds beyond.
