East Coast - an oil on canvas original by Richard Stanley

Because I love to surf, we tend to camp surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery. This is where I get my love for the seascape and the big skies. This beach extended for miles with hardly a soul around except for these seagulls. I love the big expanse of sky (five layers of paint) which adds to the dramatic feeling of remoteness and the fresh, pristine feel of the beach. I have purposely chosen to paint a low horizon, to emphasise the nature of the sky in these areas.

Materials

Here is a list of the materials that I used in the studio when painting this canvas:
  • Underpainting performed using acrylic paints
  • Two coats of Gesso primer composed of plaster and white acrylic paint
  • Sable long-haired fine pointed rigger brush - tip size 1mm
  • Five layers of oil paint to create my characteristic blended sky
  • Windsor & Newton oil paints thinned with Archival Odourless solvent
  • Twenty five shades created from a palette of nine tertiary colours
  • Stretched canvas over timber frame
  • Eight Hog hair brushes - varying sizes 3mm - 20mm
  • Three pure bristled blending brush - sizes 75, 80 and 100mm
  • Vegetable gum non-porous renewable paper palette
  • Italian Beechwood full-size professional studio easel
I spent six months creating this work, trying several different techniques to attain the desired sky. The sky required subtle tones and colours in order to emphasise the strong foreground, to lead your eye into the distance and to give a sense of depth.
